RC Flyer Loves To Fly Slow!

  From Airpigz.com

My friend Gary (youtuber sr71afan) makes some of the coolest simplified RC foam flyers and fun little videos to go with them. By going with hyperlightweight foam and flying either indoors or in still outside air, he experiences a purified beauty of flight that really clicks with me... I hope it clicks with you too.
This one is a very conventional looking taildragger with such a lightweight wing structure that the wings sag on the ground and have loads of dihedral in the air. The takeoff roll from a standing start looks to be under two feet and the overall slow flying is very relaxing to watch. And don't be impatient and give up after 30 seconds... if you do you'll miss the flight thru the lean-to porch at :50 (after the spectators clear a path), and even more important, you'll miss his sweet formation flight with a full scale aircraft passing overhead at 2:45. It's more of the creative RC flying that makes Gary's videos so much fun to watch. His hat-mounted video cam is also a big part of what makes his videos different. As long as he's watching the airplane, we are too. Plus, that's why we get some passes that go by so close to the camera.
I've just created a new AirPigz category labeled sr71afan so you can easily check out the other videos from Gary, some of which are him flying and some are other cool flyers. Enjoy!

Fascinating 1995 Story Of The 'Kee Bird' B-29 Salvage Attempt

From Airpigz.com

There are so many interesting stories from the world of aviation that it's easy to miss some of the really fascinating ones. One such story for me is seen in this video about the 1995 attempt to recover the B-29 Kee Bird from a frozen resting place in northwest Greenland. The effort was led Darryl Greenamyer, a man who has had a most incredible life in the sky. He was my hero when I was a kid watching him race the F8F Bearcat known as Conquest 1 at Reno in the late 60's. His experiences include flying the SR-71 at Lockheed's Skunk Works, over 40 years of air racing, and unusual projects like working to set speed records in a modified F-104. Those stories I knew about, but a long lost B-29 in Greenland, and the effort to bring it back home... somehow, that's a story I had missed.
This video is a segment from a 1996 NOVA special on the salvage attempt titled B-29 Frozen In Time. This is the last segment and it runs 10 minutes. If you really want to experience the entire story, you can click this link to go to the full listing of all the segments on youtube.
To get as far as they did in retrieving this incredibly rare aircraft, only to lose it as they did is disheartening to say the least. But seeing the level of self-control as they watch the airplane burn is a real lesson in realizing that there's only so much we can control in this life.

Killer Planes Review the Dynam Grand Cruiser with Video!

Another Dynam home run! This is a GREAT trainer-type plane- steady, smooth and responsive, even in wind. Check out it's flying performance in this video!
The servoless retracts are really sturdy and dependable, and it's "flap ready" with the new Dynam "extended flap' design. This means that the hardware for the flap system is included with the plane- all you need is our Killerplanes flap kit to finish the job off- all the necessary other parts are in there (servos, wires, adapters, reversers, control rods and horns, everything but the hot glue!), ready to hook the flaps up to your 6 channel Transmitter/Receiver. A word about this new Dynam flap design- it's an AMAZING piece of engineering. Flaps on foamies are usually supported by the servo, meaning that the "lift" provided by the flap portion of the wing is constantly pulling on the servo arm, putting a load on the servo the entire time you're flying. This new design is clever in the extreme, and the flap fits up into a "pocket" that supports it. The supplied flap hinges include a hidden control horn, and the control rod is buried in the wing. VERY intelligent and elegant, and it's just another of the many design elements that make me LOVE these new Dynam planes!
Our Crashproofing/Airframe support system once again gives the plane 9 lives, and keeps your wings from snapping when pulling out of a steep, fast power dive (should you find yourself in that position somehow...) Don't fly without Crashproofing! Once you try it (and especially once you NEED it) you'll be hooked- it's the least expensive way of keeping a plane in the air!
The Dynam Grand Cruiser RTF version comes with the fabulous Dynam 5 channel Transmitter/Receiver (my favorite inexpensive transmitter- check out it's operation in our Youtube video "My Three Planes"), a 2200mAh 20c 3 cell LiPo battery, and a balance charger. Did I forget something? Oh yeah- the PLANE, decals, pre-installed retracts and servos, LED navigation lights, and loads of guaranteed FUN! The PNP version has everything but the Tx/Rx, battery, and charger.
The last word- now that I've made the video, I'm going to paint mine black, with some blood-red accents on the top. Batplane, here we come!

The Amazing (True) Story Of The F-106 With No Pilot!

From Airpigz.com

I've seen the pic below for several years now but I didn't know the story behind til I watched this recent video put together by AVweb. What a fascinating story - especially when you realize it was repaired and put back into service! Even more amazing to me, this exact aircraft is on display at the Air Force Museum, which I just spent three days at last weekend, but I didn't even realize it until just now as I was putting this post together!
Hmpf. I guess I'll have to go back to the Air Force Museum again! : )
